It all started when we, the founders, decided to adopt a couple of rats for ourselves. We scoured the internet looking for information about rats, and when we learned about where pet store rats come from, how so many rats are subjected to the same kind of conditions we all read about with regard to puppy mills, we knew our only option was to adopt. We decided on the ones that would join our family, but with so many still out there being subjected to horrible conditions, we were compelled to help. We took in a handful of rats in need knowing we had friends who wanted to adopt, then took in a few more, widened our circle of contacts, and the rescue was officially formed in November 2009.

As time went on, we found ourselves spending more and more on veterinary bills and day-to-day care of the rats waiting for adoption. To help offset the multiple costs involved in rescue -- medical bills, food, cages, and everything else required to give our critters the lives they deserve -- we request a small fee for every animal adopted.

Please note that no one at Chelle's Critter Haven makes a salary, we are all working as unpaid employees. This means that 100% of donations we receive go directly to animal care!
